According to The Verge, Sonos is working on a high-end streaming set-top box that should be released this year. Sonos intends to price its future product between $200 and $400, making it far more expensive than the Apple TV, even if any set-top box will compete with the latter.

The Verge claims that the hardware is a plain black box with a remote control that is marginally thicker than a deck of cards. Although it will run an Android version, Sonos has created a "beautiful" interface.

Netflix, Max, Disney Plus, and other streaming services' content will be available on the set-top box through a single software interface that facilitates universal search. The set-top box will have Sonos Voice Control, and Sonos is reportedly working to lessen the fragmentation of the streaming environment. Similar efforts have been made by Apple, and Siri may recommend information from a variety of sources.

The set-top box from Sonos contains HDMI ports with passthrough capability and can also be used as an HDMI switch. Gamers will be able to connect soundbars, game consoles, and other gadgets. In addition to preventing TVs from having audio sync delays with Sonos-branded soundbars, the device fixes a latency issue that has long irritated Sonos.

The set-top box will enable the setup of a surround sound system with Sonos devices for Sonos users who have Sonos speakers but no soundbar. Additionally, it will provide gigabit Ethernet and support Wi-Fi 7.

A victory in 2025 is necessary for Sonos to rebuild its reputation after a botched app launch in 2024 that ultimately resulted in the resignation of Sonos CEO Patrick Spence. The Arc Ultra Soundbar, which was released late last year, had better reviews than the Sonos Ace headphones, which were released around the time the app was updated.
