Although cellphones have become a necessary part of daily life, excessive use of them is damaging married couples' relationships in India, according to a report released on Monday by smartphone manufacturer Vivo.


In the "Switch Off" survey with Cybermedia Research on "Smartphones and their influence on human relationships 2022," it was discovered that 67% of respondents admitted to using their phones even when they were with their spouse. Nevertheless, 89 percent of respondents said that they converse with their spouse less frequently than they would like.

The results also demonstrate that smartphone users spend less time and agree that in-person interactions are more calming.

According to the research, "people are admitting the issues and are prepared to make changes. Eighty-eight percent of respondents felt that rising smartphone usage is damaging their connection with their spouses. Eighty-four percent of respondents wanted to spend more time with their spouse.

According to the report, 90% of respondents would want to spend more free time having meaningful interactions with their spouses.

The results show that respondents spend an average of 4.7 hours per day using a smartphone, and this is true for both genders. In addition, 73 percent of respondents acknowledge that their spouse called them on the phone to complain about their overindulgence rather than spending time with them.

According to the report, 66 percent of respondents believe that excessive smartphone use has harmed their connection with their spouse. "The study finds that 70% of people become annoyed when their spouse asks for anything while they are absorbed in their cellphones," it stated.

One thousand customers were surveyed throughout Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Pune for the study.

"Although there is no denying the importance of smartphones in modern life, users must nonetheless exercise caution when using them excessively. According to the study, 68 percent of partners have occasionally felt guilty for being preoccupied with their phone when spending time with their spouse, and 69 percent of respondents said they feel periodically distracted by their smartphone or are not paying enough attention to them.

According to the survey report, using a smartphone to unwind is the favourite leisure activity for 90% of the respondents. Each smartphone user gets daily free time of 1.5 hours on average. The majority of them like spending their free time with their families. While visiting family, they still have their smartphone with them.

The survey found that transactional dialogue and informal interaction typically last for close to two hours on average.

The survey found that 88 percent of respondents spent their leisure time on the smartphone, which has now become a habit for them. "Eighty-nine percent of people feel the temptation to reach out to their smartphone as soon as they obtain some spare time," the report concluded.
