For a limited number of its next phones, OnePlus has promised OxygenOS upgrades for four years. In addition, the manufacturer of smartphones would provide these phones with five years of security upgrades. The identities of the devices receiving more OS upgrades have not been made official, although it is most likely relevant to its flagships due out in 2023. Given that many of the well-known smartphone manufacturers provide up to three years of OS upgrades, this is a significant commitment made by an Android OEM.

In an official OnePlus community post, Gary Chen, head of software products, said that the firm will offer OxygenOS for four years and security updates for five years. He said that OnePlus wants its customers to keep their smartphones for longer, thus this new update strategy would provide them access to the phone's most recent security and functional upgrades.

"We make every effort to improve our user experience since we are a user-focused business. We want to make sure we can provide that option because more consumers are keeping their devices for longer periods of time. With this new update strategy, you will always have access to the most recent security updates and technological advancements needed to maintain OnePlus' renowned quick and fluid user experience "The post said as much.

For users of the OnePlus, this is excellent news. As of right now, the company provides its pricey phones like the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 10 series with three significant OxygenOS updates and four years of security updates. But cheaper devices like the OnePlus 7, OnePlus Nord, and OnePlus Nord 2 only receive two significant OS updates.

The OnePlus 8 series, which consists of the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus 8T, has received the OxygenOS 13 upgrade based on Android 13. The OnePlus 10 Pro received the Android 13-based upgrade in September, while the OnePlus 9 range received it in November. Along with other improvements to the aesthetics, connectivity, personalization, security and privacy, health and digital wellbeing, performance optimization, and gaming experience, the update includes the company's Quantum Animation Engine 4.0, which includes a new behaviour recognition feature, real-world physical motions in animations, and optimised fonts.

For the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy A53, Galaxy A33, Galaxy Fold 3 and Galaxy Fold 4 phones, Samsung is providing four years of significant Android updates. Having said that, Google is providing its recently released flagship Pixel 7 series with three years of OS upgrades and five years of security patches.
