Introduction
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is the thinnest foldable phone on the market in 2022, an outstanding feat that should keep it in the limelight for a long time. Unfortunately, few will be able to acquire this Mix Fold 2 because it is only available in China.
Xiaomi appears to have no intention of selling its cutting-edge smartphones outside of China. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra was not released in foreign markets, nor was the original Mix Fold, nor was the excellent Xiaomi 12S Ultra, and now the Mix Fold 2 is coming to show us what we cannot have.
With everything out of the way, let's take a look at the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, which recently arrived at our office.
The new Mix Fold 2 is a significant improvement over the previous Mix Fold. To begin with, it is significantly smaller and lighter - the folded Fold 2 is only 11mm thick (vs 17mm) and weighs 262 grammes (vs. 317g). It features a better hinge, a Gorilla Glass Victus front, an aluminium chassis, and a frosted rear glass.
The two displays on the Mix Fold are among the best in the business. The display on the front (cover) is a 6.56-inch OLED with a normal 1080p resolution and a typical 21:9 aspect ratio. It also has a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ compatibility, and Dolby Vision.
Of course, the folding display is the Mix Fold 2's focal point. It's one of the biggest on the market right now: an 8.02-inch Foldable LTPO2 OLED display with no cuts. It can display over 1 billion colours, has a refresh rate of 120Hz, is HDR10+, and is Dolby Vision certified. This screen is brighter and should be less reflective than the Mix Fold, in addition to having a higher refresh rate.
The Mix Fold 2 is equipped with the most recent Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 CPU and 12GB RAM. This is in pace with the current crop of flagships and a significant improvement over the Snapdragon 888 chipset used in the original Mix Fold.
Another highlight is the back camera, which is a Leica-powered triple arrangement with a 50MP OIS main, an 8MP OIS 2x tele, and a 13MP ultrawide camera with AF. Indeed, the Mix Fold 2 is yet another Xiaomi-Leica collaboration that few will have access to, but that is what it is.
There is one difference between the Mix Fold 2 and the Mix Fold - there are now two speakers instead of four. They should, however, be bigger than previously and adjusted by harmon/kardon. There is also support for Dolby Atmos.
Finally, the Mix Fold 2 is backed by a 4,500mAh battery with 67W rapid wired charging capabilities.
In a head-to-head comparison, Samsung's most recent Galaxy Z Fold4 offers two significant advantages over the Mix Fold 2. The Galaxy is IPX8-rated for water resistant, and it runs Android 12L rather than ordinary Android 12, which has native support for foldable screens via some specific methods. The Mix Fold 2 cannot compete with the convenience offered by Samsung's Galaxy, but MIUI Fold 13 includes several interesting features.
The Mix Fold 2, on the other hand, is significantly slimmer and has bigger displays, as well as luxury packaging.
Mix Fold 2 Unboxing
Indeed, the Mix Fold 2 comes in a large black box that includes the proprietary 67W charger as well as the 6A-rated cable required for fast charging to function. But that's not the end of the story!
You'll also receive a USB-C-to-3.5mm converter in the package, allowing you to keep using your beloved wired headphones. You also get a unique leather cover with an adjustable kickstand! Nice!
Finally, the cover screen includes a thin protection that was applied at the manufacturing.
