According to various industry reports, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has given a letter of intent (LoI) to Reliance Jio Infocomm's satellite unit. Jio will be able to launch global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) services in the locations where it has been granted a licence. Mobile satellite networks may communicate with satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), and geosynchronous orbit (GEO).

According to an industry source cited in a PTI report, Reliance Jio Infocomm's satellite unit, also known as Jio Satellite Communications Limited (JSCL), has received a letter of intent (LoI) from the Telecom Department of India, allowing the company to set up and operate global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) services.

According to reports, the LoI was granted to the telecom business on Monday. Reliance Jio can start up and operate GMPCS services in the places where the government has granted it a licence with the permit.

The licences granted to the corporation will be good for 20 years. They will be in force from the day they are given to the firm following the fulfilment of the specified requirements.

GMPCS services provide satellite voice and data services. These movable satellites can operate in conjunction with low-earth orbit (LEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), and geosynchronous (GEO) satellites.

Reliance Jio revealed earlier this year its aspirations to deliver satellite-based broadband services across India in conjunction with Luxembourg-based SES, putting it on par with Elon Musk's SpaceX and Sunil Mittal's OneWeb in terms of high-speed internet services.
