Some iPhone models do not have the iOS 16 Battery Percentage Display.

The new battery % display, which initially appeared in an iOS 16 beta, is one of the new improvements that arrive with an upgrade to iOS 16 on eligible iPhones. On iPhones with the TrueDepth camera and the display notch, the function essentially allows you to check the battery's charge state without having to slide down the Control Center. It turns out that this capability is not available to all iPhone users.

Apple's iOS 16 operating system is now available for a large list of compatible iPhones (beginning with the iPhone 8), although not all of them will receive all of the features. The new battery % display is situated to the right of the TrueDepth camera system, which is integrated within the display notch. It now displays the battery %, which is easier to see than sliding down the Control Center.

Apple has recently stated in a support document that the battery % display functionality would not be available on all iPhone models. According to Apple's support documentation, the new battery % display is not accessible on the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini, or the more current iPhone 13 mini. It does not explain why the functionality cannot be added to certain iPhone models.

While the new battery % display in iOS 16 is a great addition, the way it shows the number can be difficult to see since the new indicator puts the percentage inside the battery symbol rather than next to it, as it did in previous models and in the Control Center. The icon itself remains totally filled, giving consumers the appearance that the battery has not been depleted, until the battery falls below 20%, at which point the icon turns red and remains half filled.

This is considerably different from how Android devices display battery status, which normally has the battery symbol filled in to show how much battery life is remaining along with the percentage showing next to it.
