Next week, Apple will reveal its 2022 iPhone range, and in the days before the reveal, speculations are flying like never before. According to one report regarding the new "notch" in the display, the two cuts will blend together utilising display pixels that aren't lighted. The software would decide whether or not to illuminate the pixels in between the cutouts.

This is in line with information provided to MacRumors by an unnamed source, which is corroborated by speculations making the rounds on Chinese social media. The rumour is claimed to have come from Foxconn workers who are involved in the manufacturing of the iPhone 14 Pro.

Soon after, a confirming story from 9to5Mac said that these spaces between the cutouts will also be set aside for showing Apple's privacy indications, which were introduced with iOS 14. It indicates when a device app is actively using the microphone or video cameras. This might allow additional status icons to fit in the display's corners.

The camera app is also anticipated to receive an improved layout that relocates some of the controls to the top of the screen, according to 9to5Mac's source. In particular, the status bar will have the flash and Live Photo button immediately above it, with the other options immediately beneath the cutouts.

Later, when watching movies or getting notifications, this extended cutout might display pixels. This would still feature the technology required for Apple's Face ID biometric method and be a less distracting option for watching content than the notch.

The information will be made official next week during Apple's livestream event, so don't take the rumour as gospel. Apple will introduce four new iPhone models, two of which will be 6.1 inches in size and the other two will be larger at 6.7 inches. This year, there won't be a "mini" iPhone.
