Global PC and tablet sales are expected to take a significant impact as the economy continues to deteriorate and inflation continues to rise.
IDC's most recent report(opens in new tab) paints a bleak future for both tablet aficionados and PC manufacturers, with sales expected to plummet after a rise during the epidemic.
As consumers and businesses around the world tighten their wallets, the analyst group forecasts that shipments of "conventional" PCs (desktops, laptops, and workstations) will decline by 12.8% in 2022 while tablet shipments will fall by 6.8%.
PC sales decline
As demand for newer products dries up as a result of the worsening economic situation, the consumer sector is expected to experience a 9.9% drop in shipping volume. Enterprise sales are expected to drop 1.6% on a yearly basis, while SMB shipments will drop 10.5% from 2021 levels.
IDC predicts 462.1 million PC and tablet sales worldwide in 2022, a 10.8% decline from the previous year.
According to the company, shipments will likely continue to fall through 2023, when the combined PC and tablet market is projected to shrink by 2.6% as a result of weaker demand from the consumer and education sectors and ongoing budget monitoring requirements for enterprise targets.
The future is not altogether gloomy, though, since sales are expected to resume growing in 2024. IDC anticipates that global PC market sales will surpass 2022 shipping levels by 2026.
Although demand is waning, Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, noted that the outlook for shipments "remains above pre-pandemic levels."
"As support for Windows 10 approaches its end, long-term demand will be fueled by a gradual economic recovery mixed with an update of enterprise technology. Additionally projected to drive more volumes are educational deployments and hybrid work."
