How to rapidly lock your smartphone's screen with a simple gesture

By touching your home screen twice on various Android devices, you may turn off your screen and thereby lock your smartphone. I recently found this gesture, and it strikes me as clever as a Cro-Magnon inventing fire.

We've all heard of the Rear Tap, the renowned double-tap gesture that, when performed on the back of a smartphone by Apple or Xiaomi, allows you to access multiple shortcuts. However, when you tap the front of the smartphone, strange things might happen.

I was looking through the settings of my Nothing Phone (1), the complete review of which will be published later this week, when I came across the "Press twice to turn off display" option. By double pressing from the home screen, you may turn off the smartphone's screen and therefore lock it.

The steps for my Nothing Phone (1) are as follows:

Long-press your home screen.

Select Home screen settings.

To deactivate the display, enable the Double tap option.

However, the functionality is also available from several other manufacturers, including and Xiaomi. The functionality is enabled by default in One UI 4, however here are the instructions anyway:

Navigate to Settings, then Advanced Features.

Go to Gestures and Movements.

Turn on the option To turn off the screen, press twice.

The only difference with MIUI is that the double tap can only be performed from the lock screen. Essentially, the feature is used to wake up or switch off the screen after it has been locked, for example, to display the Always On Display. Here are the actions to take:

Navigate to the Settings menu.

Go to Lock Screen and Always On Display (bravo Xiaomi for the translation, really).

When the device is locked, enable the Double tap option to toggle the screen back on or off.

That concludes our fast instruction on how to double tap to turn off your smartphone's screen. What are your thoughts on this feature? Is it possible that I'm completely out of my depth by only finding this feature now?
