Last year, Google introduced a Maps function for Android and iOS that displays the greenest route. The United States and Canada have had it for about 18 months, and Germany joined the fray in August.
Although Google did not provide the complete list of territories, the mode is already being used in "almost 40" European nations, including France, Ireland, Poland, Spain, and the UK.
Even though it will take longer to get there, the eco-friendly routing mode provides the most efficient route. In addition to providing the route where the speed is more constant and calculating the gasoline saved, it will take into account hills, traffic, tolls, and other stops.
You can choose whether you drive an electric, hybrid, diesel, or gasoline vehicle on Google Maps. Additionally, if you enjoy the latter, you can always visit and bookmark ArenaEV.com, where we discuss everything related to electric vehicles.
The method is based on input from the European Environment Agency and incorporates Google's own machine learning models of the most used engines in specific regions. As a result, certain fossil-fueled vehicles may be redirected via highways, while electric vehicles may be advised to use level surface streets for improved energy recovery.
The function is being introduced across Europe just in time for this winter's impending energy crisis. The cost of heating is expected to rise significantly in many Old Continent nations, therefore any cost-saving initiatives, like this one from Google Maps, are greatly appreciated.
