Google Chat, the company's most recent messaging tool for users and businesses, will take the place of Google Hangouts, which has already been discontinued. Earlier this year, the app was withdrawn from both the App Store and the Google Play store. As the last step in totally replacing Google Hangouts, the messaging service that debuted in 2013 as a Google+ feature, with Google Chat, the default messaging app for Google Workspace customers, Google has now announced that Hangouts on the web will be updated to Google Chat. The move will start on November 1st, the corporation has announced.
The Google Apps Team sent an email to Gadgets 360 announcing the transition from Hangouts on the web to Chat on the web. We are emailing you because not all of your conversations—or just part of them—will seamlessly transition from Hangouts to Chat, according to the email. For communication from Google, check your inbox. The business advises users to "use Google Takeout and quickly download their data before January 1, 2023, when Hangouts data will be erased," if they want to save their Hangouts discussions.
Up until November 1st, 2022, Hangouts will still allow access to discussions and Hangouts on the web. Don't delete any discussions you want to save because if you do, Google Chat information that corresponds to those talks might also be removed. You can stop using it at any time if you don't want to switch to Chat. You can "can remove discussions in Chat or completely delete your Google account," although doing so will also delete all of the account's data.
Google Chat is moving to Chat because, according to Google, it "offers closer connectivity with other Google Workspace products as well as new functionality." GIF picker and Spaces, a specialised area for topic-based discussion, are two of the more recent additions to Google Chat. These capabilities are similar to those of Twitter.
To stop new users from downloading the cancelled chat programme on iOS and Android devices, Google removed the Hangouts app from the Google Play store and the Apple App Store earlier this year. It was announced in November 2018 that Google Hangouts would transition to Google Chat. In October 2020, the firm started moving Workspace users from Hangouts to Meet.
