According to a recent claim, Apple is releasing an iOS 12 update for older iPhone and iPad devices. The new update arrives less than a week before the company is anticipated to introduce new iPhone models along with iOS 16, the future version of its operating system. The newest iOS 12 update, which includes a critical security remedy for a vulnerability that might have been exploited by attackers, is now available for the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. It will also be made available for the iPad Air, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3.

On Wednesday, eligible iPhone and iPad devices started receiving the iOS 12.5.6 update, which was originally noticed by XDA Developers. A security hole in Apple's WebKit browser engine is patched with the upgrade. Apple claims that the vulnerability was caused by the processing of fraudulently created web content and might have permitted the execution of arbitrary code. The security hole was disclosed by an unnamed researcher, according to the corporation.

Notably, Apple claims to be aware of a claim that the security flaw may have been actively exploited. Owners of the following devices should update to iOS 12.5.6 as soon as possible: the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod Touch (6th generation).

On compatible older iPhone and iPad models, users who haven't yet downloaded the update can do so by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

Apple is preparing to release iOS 16, the newest iteration of its upgrading system, in the meanwhile. Improvements to the company's applications and a redesigned, highly customizable Lock Screen interface are both slated to come with the upgrade, which is scheduled to go live on September 7. Apple has announced that iOS 16 will be available for the iPhone 8 and later devices.
