In honour of the game's 20th anniversary on the PC, Mafia has been made available as a free download on Steam for those who missed out on this classic.
For those who are unfamiliar, Mafia is an open-world, third-person shooter that will keep you captivated.
It still holds up well now due to that and the intricately woven environment the game benefits from. So it's wonderful to see the game among the top free Steam games.
From now until September 5(opens in new tab), Mafia will be available for free to download. As you may recall, Mafia benefited from a recent remake (in 2020). As you might expect, the Definitive Edition is not free, but it is currently on sale for 65% off on Steam through September 8th (opens in new tab).
This event serves to publicise the recent word that a new Mafia game is in development in addition to commemorating the original Mafia's 20th anniversary.
Graphics are not what create a game (but you can always upgradeth them)
One thing to keep in mind if you're hoping to start playing Mafia right away is to keep your expectations for the graphics in check. Naturally, because this is a game from two decades ago, it appears out of date; but, the rest of the experience and atmosphere more than make up for that. Particularly if you're the kind of gamer who can rely more on their imagination and isn't bothered by an older game's aesthetic (and maybe little bugs here and there).
There are ways to enhance the graphics, though, since there are available community modpacks that spruce up the images (such are the joys of PC gaming, of course). You might also buy and play Mafia: Definitive Edition, a remake that has been completely upgraded in terms of all the graphics bells and whistles.
