Lei Jun claimed that Xiaomi is investing RMB 3.3 billion in the initial R&D stage and that more than 500 employees are working on its autonomous driving technologies. By the end of the year, it's expected that the team will have more than 600 members.
The primary members of the team have previous experience working for some of the most well-known companies in the AI industry. Their expert knowledge covers every technological area needed to build Xiaomi's self-developed autonomous driving technology, including sensors, chips, algorithms, simulation, tool-chain, data platform, and more. Since its formal debut last year, Xiaomi's autonomous driving unit has attracted a large number of top industry talent. Currently, the department's 50 industry professionals act as the backbone of the team's 500 members. With more than 70% of the staff having master's or doctoral degrees, the group as a whole has outstanding educational credentials.
In order to improve its autonomous driving, Xiaomi has fully bought the firm Shendong Technology. In order to handle issues like "reserved parking spaces," "automated valet parking," and "automatic robotic arm charging," Xiaomi's autonomous driving team concentrated on parking and introduced a novel auto-parking solution. In order to comply with applicable national rules and regulations, further parking lot services will be made available in the future, and a combination of AI and service-oriented features will be provided.
Lei Jun also mentioned that 140 test vehicles will be built by Xiaomi as part of the initial phase of the development of its autonomous driving technology. They will go through individual testing all throughout the nation in an effort to dominate the smart EV industry by 2024.
The XiaoAi AI Assistant team, the Smartphone Camera team, and the Xiaomi AI Lab are just a few of the various Xiaomi teams that provide the Xiaomi Auto team with substantial support in addition to internal resources. These teams are collaborating to create an advanced autonomous driving experience.
