On July 4th, Xiaomi unveiled the 12S series. The "huge" 1 inch IMX 989 sensor on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. The enormous circular camera module is one of the design's most striking elements, but a recent teardown by JerryRigEverything revealed it is not a 1′′ sensor. Instead of being in the centre, the primary camera sensor is situated on the left.

Although it may not be a 1 inch sensor, he said that this is standard in the industry. Both the side and diagonal measurements he made of the main image sensor indicate that the camera is only slightly smaller than 1 inch in size.

The sensor is still bigger than the camera on any other smartphone, even though it is not a full inch wide. Here is a side-by-side comparison of the 1/2.0′′ telephoto and 1′′ main camera sensors.

JerryRigEverything added that Xiaomi did not unintentionally misrepresent the size of the sensor. The actual size of an image sensor is not what is measured when discussing its size. The reality is the diameter of the circle that this sensor can fit into. For a very long time, this has served as a measurement standard.
