Without rooting, remove the ads and install Google Play on the Kindle Fire

The Amazon Fire, formerly known as the Amazon Kindle Fire, is still a fantastic value. It makes the ideal travelling companion for streaming movies and TV shows when combined with an Amazon Prime membership. But the Kindle Fire's lack of apps and intrusive Amazon advertising on the lock screen argue against it.

However, we'll demonstrate for free how to install Google Play and get rid of adverts from your Kindle Fire without having to use a computer.

This tutorial shows you how to install the Google Play Store without rooting a 5th generation Kindle Fire 7" running Fire OS version 5.3.6.4 from November 2018. It also shows you how to get rid of the lock screen advertising. Also not required is a Windows computer.

Check the comments for assistance with other Kindle Fire or Fire OS versions if these solutions weren't successful for you.

Rooting: Should You Do It?

Although Amazon is getting ready to launch the Fire with its own Appstore, several Google apps, like Gmail, are not yet available. That's a deal-breaker for some people who like Google Play over the Appstore.

Although rooting the Amazon Fire tablet enables you to install a regular Android version and subsequently the Google Play Store, you forfeit the user experience designed for Amazon Prime content consumption. However, rooting has the potential to invalidate your warranty and, in the worst event, brick your gadget.

The Amazon Fire's operating system, Fire OS, is a customised version of Android. Thus, installing the Google Play Store and getting rid of lock screen adverts just require a few modifications and don't require root access.

When you're finished, your lock screen should look like the image below; this is far more appealing than a screen plastered in Amazon advertisements!

How to Set Up Google Play on the Kindle Fire from Amazon

First, we'll demonstrate how to download Google Play directly to your Kindle Fire without using a Windows computer. Scroll down for a different approach if that doesn't work for whatever reason.

Have you upgraded your Fire tablet with an SD card? Disable app installations to your SD card in Settings > Storage > SD Card before you begin. This is a recognised reason for the installation process to fail, even though it wasn't an issue on my device (the apps didn't install onto the SD card despite the option being enabled).

Download APK files first

Be sure to allow the installation of third-party apps before downloading the files. Apps from Unknown Sources can be enabled by going to Settings > Security.

Download the subsequent APKs to your Kindle Fire right away:

Account Manager for Google (April 11, 2016)

Service Framework for Google (April 4, 2016)

Play Services by Google (February 7, 2019)

Shop on Google Play (February 21, 2019)

Please take note that these APKs are compatible with Android 5.1 and higher. They ought to be compatible upward. On your Kindle Fire, go to Settings > Device Options > System Updates to verify the Android version. You can browse the more recent APK updates for the corresponding app if you're using Android 6 or 7 and download the most recent version for your Fire OS.

Open each link, scroll down, and tap the Download APK option to start downloading the APK files. A window will notify you before the download even begins that the file might damage your device. To confirm that you still want to download it, press OK.

2. Install the APK files for the Google Play Store.
Navigate to your home screen after the downloads are finished. Launch Docs > Local Storage > Download after that.

Tap each file to install it in the following order (which corresponds to the order of download above):

com.google.android.gsf.login

com.google.android.gsf

com.google.android.gms \scom.android.vending

To change the Next choice in the bottom-right to Install, you must browse through the privacy and device access notes.

3. Install Google Play Store.

Once all four files have been installed, your home screen should display the Google Play Store app. To begin the setup procedure, tap it. Bit the apps update in the background, you can notice a spinning circle for a while.

You should then get a screen that says "checking info." You're almost done when the app allows you to sign in with your Google account.

After successfully logging in, you can download any software you want, including Gmail and Chrome from the Google Play Store.

How to Clean Up the Amazon Kindle Fire of Ads

We'll discuss three distinct approaches. Try them in the prescribed order.

1. Using a tool, free of charge, remove ads from your Kindle Fire

The most sophisticated way to get rid of advertisements for free, but it takes a Windows PC and some tweaking. On your Kindle, you must also enable developer mode and ADB. Complete the first step to enable ADB and (if necessary) step two to install Google ADB drivers before moving on to the section under "How to Install Google Play on Your Kindle Fire From a PC."

Download RootJunkie's Amazon Ad Remover Tool once you've enabled ADB and linked your Amazon Fire so that it appears under My PC (if it doesn't, install Google ADB drivers as described below). Run the Run Me To Remove Ads.bat after unzipping the archive, then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

The tool stated it had deleted advertisements when I used this technique. Ads were still present once I restarted, though. Rebooting after using the utility had no effect on that. I then attempted the next approach.

2. Request from Amazon the removal of ads from your Kindle (for Free)

Check to ensure if the Special Offers option for your Fire is available before using this method, as it is stated in the third paragraph below. If not, you are effectively compelled to speak with customer service. They might be more eager to assist you as a result.

Locate the hotline or support form for your local Amazon Fire. The number is (206) 922-0880 for the US, however if you use this support form and are in the US, they will also call you back. Log into your account, go to Devices, choose your Fire, and then click Tell us more. Choose General question about the device/accessory > Special Offers/Ads as a screensaver on device from the list of options.

This will provide instructions for self-destructing them. You can look it over, but you should wait to speak with a live person. You can opt to call or chat; I choose to call. To verify that this was my account, the representative requested my email and mailing addresses.

These discussion points, some of which I found to be effective:

I commented that it was a costly price since the device was five years old when the representative noted the cost to remove the lock screen adverts ($15).
I countered that I had read internet accounts where Amazon customer support has removed adverts for free as a courtesy when she said she had no other choice.
I reiterated that this was disappointing given the age of the gadget when she replied that they used to be able to remove the advertising for free but were no longer permitted to.
If you are unable to utilise the age of your device as a defence but are currently (and maybe long-term) an Amazon Prime subscriber, I would use that defence instead.
You might also say that you had to phone them since you couldn't find the Special Offers option.

She excused herself in my situation, saying she needed to verify something. She had good news to share when she returned. She was able to get rid of the commercials, but she insisted on doing so just once out of politeness.

I'm not sure if it actually made a difference, but I declined to allow the call to be recorded for quality assurance when asked. Therefore, in principle, the customer service representative may have been significantly more likely to deviate from policy and assist me since there was no record of our interaction.

3. Pay Amazon to get your Kindle's ads removed.

This is your only remaining option, so I sincerely hope you aren't that anxious to get rid of the obnoxious lock screen adverts from your Amazon Fire. Log in to your Amazon account, then click Your Content and Devices under the Account & Lists option.

Expand the Kindle Fire's Actions menu by switching to the Devices tab. There may be a Special Offers option here. Next to this selection, click Edit. Then, pay to have the advertising removed. You need to have 1-click payment setup in order to do this.

How to Install Google Play From a PC on an Amazon Fire

You can attempt this alternative if the first approach for setting up Google Play on your Amazon Fire tablet didn't work. We'll employ a tool from RootJunkie that also enables you to get rid of the Kindle Fire's lock screen advertisements.

1. Turn on ADB and Developer Options

You must first activate developer options on your Fire before we can proceed. Navigate to Settings > Device Options and choose Serial Number from the list. Then tap the serial number entry seven to 10 times, until Developer Options shows up underneath.

Open Developer Options and enable Enable ADB under Debugging.

Install ADB USB Driver, second (optional)

You should be able to connect your Kindle Fire to Windows 10 and see it appear under This PC. Windows ought to install the necessary drivers and immediately detect the device.

You will need to manually install the Google USB driver if the device doesn't appear in order to use ADB (Android Debug Bridge) debugging on Windows. You can either manually download the drivers or utilise RootJunky's Amazon Fire 5th Gen SuperTool.

Before moving on:

On Windows 8 and 10, disable driver signature enforcement (instructions below).
Turn down any running emulators, including the BlueStacks Android app player (check Task Manager!).

Driver Signature Enforcement: How to Disable It in Windows 10 and 8

Windows 8 and Windows 10 users must disable the mandatory driver signature in order to follow the preceding procedures.

Windows 8: To access the Charms menu, press the Windows key + C keyboard shortcut. Then, select Settings > More PC Settings > General. The subsequent stages are the same as Windows 10's.

Windows 10: Open the Settings menu by pressing Windows key + I, then select Update and Security > Recovery.

Click Restart Now in the Advanced Startup section.

Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart from the reboot screen.

You are now viewing the Startup Settings panel. Select option seven, "Disable driver signature enforcement," from the menu.

You'll be able to install drivers that weren't digitally signed after your computer restarts. The driver signature enforcement will turn back on after you restart.

Installing the ADB USB Driver: Steps

You ought to have downloaded and unzipped RootJunky's SuperTool in the meanwhile. Connecting your Fire to your computer is now necessary. You might now see a window referring to ADB debugging mode. Verify it, move forward, and make sure the Fire appears under This PC.

the first batch file in the SuperTool folder should then be launched: 1-Amazon-Fire-5h-gen.bat

If everything goes according to plan, your desktop should display the screen below.

Press 1 and then press Enter to install the ADB driver. A second screen will appear with the following choices:

Press 1 once more, then press Enter. You'll be reminded once more on another screen of the requirements you need to fulfil in order to continue.

To continue and follow the instructions on the screen, press any key. You'll now need to carry out a few tasks by hand.

Automatically, the Windows Device Manager will launch. The Fire may be found under Universal Serial Bus devices; then, with the right mouse click, choose Update Driver Software. Choose Browse my computer for driver software from this menu, then select Let me choose from a list of device drivers on my computer > Have Disk and navigate to the SuperTool's included usb drivers folder. After choosing the android winusb.inf file, click Open and then OK.

It's likely that you didn't disable the driver signature enforcement in Windows 8 or 10 if you notice an error message at this stage (see above).

Additionally, the following error could appear:

You can either download the driver from Android Studio and link the Device Manager to that location, or you can try to utilise the universal ADB Driver Installer [Broken URL Removed] and skip this step.

Once you've done that, go back to SuperTool and press any key to proceed before pressing Enter to get to the main SuperTool menu. You can now customise Fire OS.

In case you need additional direction, the video below shows all the processes we just discussed.

3. Download the Google Play Store and get rid of lock screen advertisements

Open the 1-Amazon-Fire-5h-gen.bat SuperTool if you haven't previously. Press 2 and Enter, then any key to confirm the terms, to install the Google Play Store and get rid of lock screen advertisements. SuperTool will go through four steps of installation if everything goes as planned.

Open the Windows Task Manager and make sure all emulators (hint: BlueStacks) are completely turned off if you encounter an emulator-related error at this point.

Additional Advice for Making the Most of an Amazon Fire Tablet

The Amazon Fire may not be the lightest, thinnest, or best-in-class product available, but it provides excellent value. After successfully completing this tutorial, you may take use of a user experience that is designed for Amazon Prime and all of your preferred Android apps from the Google Play Store.
