The newest APK dissection of Google's Play Services app reveals the company's efforts to enhance the overall experience on Android devices as more and more Wear OS devices begin to hit the market.
New strings in the Google Play Services beta version 22.32.12 release of the app showed, in an app deconstruction by XDA-Developers, that the company is getting ready to offer support for backing up smartwatch data when moving to a new device.
Companion backup opt in title was the name of one of the strings, and it contained the prompts "Back up your smartphone with Google One/ Backup by Google One/ Choose backup account."
Currently, customers must do a factory reset on their Wear OS smartwatch before connecting it to a new Android smartphone. It would be much easier if there was a backup option for the device.
The suggestion of Google One, a premium Google subscription, is intriguing. The Google One app contains settings and management for Google's device data backups for iOS and Android, while a Google One membership is not necessary to access the feature.
According to the article, Google would not place a function like this behind a paywall as Google One subscribers pay for additional storage on their Google Account.
Google apparently recently began releasing updates for its Camera applications on Wear OS and Android. Minor upgrades are made to the Google Camera app for Pixel devices, whereas major changes are made to the Wear OS app, which essentially serves as a remote control for Pixel users. Since quite some time, the Wear OS camera software needs to be updated. In the upcoming months, Google is also anticipated to release its brand-new Pixel Watch, which will utilise the most recent Wear OS.
