In a future version of the app, WhatsApp plans to enable avatar customization.
Although I installed this update, I can't seem to find an avatar selection choice. Why? You can find a preview of this feature in this article, but it is still in development and not yet ready to be made available to beta testers.

The news about avatars, a new way to be you on WhatsApp, was posted in the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.22.16.11 upgrade. In the far future, you will be able to use an avatar as a mask during video conversations and as a sticker to share with your friends thanks to this feature. Avatars will also allow users to set up an avatar as their profile picture, which is an added function!
This screenshot demonstrates how you may customise your avatar to find the ideal one for you. You may also select the backdrop colour that will be used for the profile picture. Even though the screenshot was obtained from the WhatsApp beta for Android, the feature will be available on the desktop beta and the WhatsApp beta for iOS as well.
Since it is still in development, we regrettably do not know when this feature will be made available. Given that it is still in the early stages of development, people won't likely start seeing it until a very long time from now.
