According to a recent eBook that Valve published on the subject of its portable gaming PC and SteamOS, the company will soon release a Steam Deck 2.

The free booklet(opens in new tab) makes it very apparent that there will be a sequel to the Steam Deck, doing so in many locations in the last chapter that concentrates on the future(opens in new tab), which Gaming On Linux(opens in new tab) flagged up. In fact, the chapter title itself states that "additional Steam Decks" and "further versions of the SteamOS operating system" will be released.

In the future, Valve will continue to support this product with enhancements and modifications to the hardware and software, bringing new generations of Steam Deck to market, according to Valve.

The company also states that it will "develop additional versions to be even more open and competent than the first iteration of Steam Deck has been," and that the Steam Deck is a "multi-generational product line." This, of course, is already quite capable and open.

Analysis: Valve requests comments on the follow-up to Steam Deck

It's encouraging to hear Valve state that it plans to create a follow-up to the Steam Deck. Although the company has previously discussed this, it is obvious that this time, the company is speaking more firmly about there being numerous generations of the portable.

In the booklet, Valve also included a question about what players would like to see in a subsequent iteration of the Steam Deck; we've already received some hints about the potential changes. These range from the obvious, like enhancing the power and portability of the Steam Deck 2, to the far less obvious, like anything VR-related that Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve, has previously suggested.

Given how popular the portable has been, as evidenced by the huge (and still very much ongoing) pre-order wait and the widespread positive reviews the Steam Deck has received, the news that Valve has some serious long-term plans for future iterations of the Steam Deck should come as no surprise. It might not be long before details about the hardware or features Valve is planning for the Steam Deck 2 start to leak out.
