 According to a survey, the number of cybercrime instances registered in the nation in 2021 increased by 5% from the previous year. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, only one-third of instances had charge sheets filed (NCRB). According to official data, fraud was the most frequent reason for cyber fraud cases, and more than 70% of the 52,974 cases filed last year came from states like Assam, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh.

52,974 incidences of cybercrime were reported in 2021, according to information from the NCRB's Crime in India - 2021 report, according to a PTI article. Despite a 5% increase in instances compared to 2020 (50,035 cases), the percentage of charge sheets in these cases was just 33.8%, making up only one-third of all reported cases.

According to data from the NCRB, of the 52,974 cases of cybercrime reported in 2021, 60.8% were driven by fraud, while extortion and sexual exploitation accounted for 5.4 and 8.6 percent of cases, respectively.

Assam, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh accounted for more than 70% of all cybercrime instances reported in the nation in 2021. 10,303 instances were reported in Telangana, while 8,829 cases were reported in Uttar Pradesh. According to the data, 8,136 and 5,662 cybercrime instances, respectively, were reported in Karnataka and Maharashtra in 2021.


According to the research, 648 occurrences of ransomware were registered in the nation in 2021, while 15 cases of cyber terrorism were documented.

Over 24,000 cases of reported cybercrime involved impersonation fraud, identity theft, and the publication of pornographic and lewd material, according to the report.
