Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said on Wednesday that the government will form expert committees to investigate the adoption of standard chargers for mobile and all portable electronic devices and submit a thorough report in two months. The secretary stated that India can initially consider examining switching to two types of chargers, including a C-Type connector, after the discussion with industry stakeholders.
"It's a complicated problem. India is involved in the production of chargers. Before making a final decision, we must consider the perspectives of all parties, including the industry, the users, the manufacturers, and the environment "He told journalists.
Each stakeholder has a unique perspective, and expert groups will be established to look at those concerns independently, he said.
Three distinct expert groups will be established to examine the charging ports used by mobile and feature phones, laptops and iPads, and wearable electronics.
The organisations will be informed this month, and they have two months to submit their proposals, he said.
Despite acknowledging the issues with e-waste, the manufacturers and sector-specific organisations wanted to talk more about them, he continued.
The administration met with stakeholders and industry experts on Wednesday to discuss the idea of utilising a single charger for all mobile and portable electronic devices.
Consumers in India are currently required to purchase a different charger each time they purchase a new gadget due to the ports on the present charger being incompatible.
The adoption of a universal USB-C port charging standard for portable electronic devices by 2024 was recently announced by the European Union. There is a comparable demand in the US.
