Four more episodes of The Umbrella Academy will air in its final season. The entire Hargreeves family will return for the "farewell season," according to a tweet from Netflix. Steve Blackman, the creator and showrunner of the Netflix original series The Umbrella Academy, will manage executive production duties before moving on to other Netflix projects. According to a statement Blackman made to Variety, the fourth season of The Umbrella Academy would mark a "fitting finale" to the storyline involving the Hargreaves siblings in a brand-new timeframe.
Showrunner Blackman told Variety, "I'm so pleased that the immensely devoted 'The Umbrella Academy' fans will be able to experience the perfect finale to the Hargreeves siblings' journey we began five years ago. But before we come to that climax, season four is going to have an extraordinary plot that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats right up to the very end.
The announcement follows Blackman's decision to extend his collaborative relationship with Netflix. He will create an original series called Orbital and adapt the highly popular PlayStation game Horizon Zero Dawn into a live-action series (not to be confused with the Gadgets 360 podcast of the same name). Our heroes fought the Sparrows at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 3, after which they entered a new timeline and lost all of their superpowers. In addition, Allison's (Emmy Raver-Lampman) and Sloane's (Genesis Rodriguez) siblings have split up.
Creator Blackman spoke to these ideas in a prepared statement. "Hargreeves, who reprogrammed the Universe at the conclusion of the season 3 finale, has established this new chronology. But he didn't get to finish what he started before Allison clicked the reset button because of her actions," it says. In the forthcoming fourth season of The Umbrella Academy, fans can expect to witness new opponents rising to the occasion in addition to the loss of powers. "How do they function without their special abilities? Is it even possible to get them back? Never before have the stakes been higher, Blackman continued.
In the post-credit scene of the Umbrella Academy season 3 finale, "Oblivion," we see a younger Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min) travelling on a Korean subway. He glances up from his book and smiles to himself as the train moves ahead. Fans were perplexed as to which incarnation or timeframe this Ben belonged to at the moment. Blackman acknowledged that it was Sparrow Ben in the statement to Netflix.
What the f—k is he doing on a Korean subway train reading a book on pottery, should you really be asking yourself? Odd, yes?" said Blackman. "Everything we observe has a purpose. And right now is no different. Ben is there for a reason, but you won't fully understand why until season 4."
The incredibly dysfunctional superhero family will return in the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy. Victor Hargreeves is portrayed by Elliot Page, Luther Hargreeves by Tom Hopper, Diego Hargreeves by David Castaeda, Klaus Hargreeves by Robert Sheehan, Number Five by Aidan Gallagher, Lila Pitts by Ritu Arya, and Sir Reginal Hargreeves by Colm Feore in the ensemble cast.
The fourth season of The Umbrella Academy has no set premiere date or number of episodes as of yet. Seasons 1 through 3 of The Umbrella Academy are now only available on Netflix.
