Dan Lin could be the Kevin Feige that DC Films is looking for. The executive-turned-producer is apparently up for the job of overseeing all prospective superhero films and TV shows. Following Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav's presentation of a 10-year plan for the DC brand, which launched a "reset" under a new team that prioritised quality over quantity, the decision was made. As a result of the change, Walter Hamada, the current president of DC Films, will step down, making room for Lin to take over.
One of the top candidates to play the part is the newly-nominated Lin, who is well-known for producing the Academy Award-winning The Lego Movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new approach will bypass three division leaders, namely Channing Dungey, Michael De Luca, and Pam Abdy from Warner Bros. Pictures, Casey Bloys from HBO/HBO Max, and Michael De Luca from Warner Bros. TV.
Lin oversaw 2017's The Lego Batman Movie as well. He mentioned in a podcast earlier this month that he nearly received the position of "overseeing the entire DC brand" in 2008. He was working on the now-cancelled Justice League movie with Oscar-winning director George Miller at the time (Mad Max: Fury Road).
According to reports, DC Films' current CEO, Hamada, will step down from his position. According to THR's sources, the parties involved are talking about pay and the future of Lin's production firm Rideback. The Dwayne Johnson–starring Black Adam movie will be released in theatres on October 21 under the supervision of the current DC head. Hamada was not informed prior to the surprising cancellation of the live-action Batgirl film, which starred Leslie Grace in the title role, it was discovered earlier this month.
Wonder Twins, Batgirl, and Scoob! Holiday Haunt's cancellation was a challenging component of this approach, according to Warner Bros. Discovery, but it did not align with their goal of maximising financial gains. According to some accounts, Batgirl was subjected to test screenings, and audiences declared it "irredeemable." The film, which was initially intended for an HBO Max release, will not be released in theatres or on the streaming service.
CEO Zaslav said he was searching for a Kevin Feige-like figure to lead the DC Films brand for the next ten years earlier this month. like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where all character tales are intertwined and ultimately culminate in a spectacular climax. He also said that the troublesome Ezra Miller-led The Flash, along with Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, have been given the all-clear for release during Warner Bros. Discovery's earnings call webcast. The release date for the Shazam! sequel, which was directed by David F. Sandberg, has been postponed until March 17.
Even Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, directed by James Wan, was postponed to December 25, 2023 because it requires additional postproduction time. Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux is now in the planning stages, and Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin are currently working on the script for the Batman sequel. The WBD offices consider both to be high-quality products.
