How to Disable Google Assistant on Chromebooks, Android, and Other Smart Devices

On Android, how to turn off Google Assistant

On an Android phone, there are two ways to disable and turn off Google Assistant. With the first, Google Assistant is no longer set as your default digital assistant, and with the second, Google Assistant is totally turned off inside of your Google account.

To access the menu, navigate to your clock at the bottom of the screen and click it.

Open your settings by clicking the gear symbol from here.

Select Search and Assistant from the left-hand menu in your settings.

You can check from this point whether Google Assistant is enabled or disabled on your device.

Turn the toggle off to turn off Google Assistant on your Chromebook.


A mute button or switch is present on every Google smart device, including Google Home and Google Nest. The mute button will let you disable Google Assistant's listening capabilities even if you might not be able to totally delete it from a Google smart device.

Use Google's Downtime function if you want Google Assistant to cease responding to instructions at specific times of the day but don't want to totally disable it.
