GPU performance of the Nvidia RTX 4070 may not be as fast as we had thought.

Since Team Green appears to still be working on several important specifications, such as the number of CUDA Cores and the quantity of video memory, Nvidia's RTX 4070 GPU may not be as strong as we've been hearing in previous rumours.

Two additional potential specifications for the RTX 4070 graphics card are revealed in the most recent update from prolific Twitter-based leaker Kopite7kimi (use your own seasoning and don't skimp on that front, either).

Review the RTX 4070's two potential specifications: PG141-SKU340/341, 7680FP32, 12G 21Gbps GDDR6X, 285W total card power, TSE 11,000 250W total card power, PG141-SKU336/337, 7168FP32, 10G 21Gbps GDDR6X, TSE 10000. I discovered that I had previously written 341 instead of 331 by accident. 29 August 2022

One of those, as you can see from the tweet, is a more potent version of the RTX 4070 that comes with 7,680 CUDA Cores and 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM (at 21Gbps) and consumes 285W of power.

The other option, which Nvidia may use, reduces the VRAM to 10GB and the amount of CUDA Cores to 7,168 while keeping the power usage at a less strenuous 250W.

According to Kopite7kimi's projections for a 3DMark score, the difference between those two potential RTX 4070 GPUs might be that the earlier, beefier card would be about 10% quicker (Time Spy Extreme benchmark).

Nvidia is performing more than one delicate balancing act, according to analysis.

The less-expensive specification listed above is an older model that was rumoured on the grapevine at one point, as keen rumour watchers will no sure recall. Since then, Kopite7kimi has changed his opinion about the RTX 4070 and claimed that it will have the same 12GB of VRAM and 7,680 cores as the more potent configuration mentioned above; the only difference between that previous leak and this new one is that the power usage has reportedly been adjusted to 285W. (rather than 300W).

That's wonderful news if Nvidia does truly go with the more powerful choice in the aforementioned tweet, but it's a letdown if the lower spec ends up being the preferred course. Since the RTX 4070 only has 10GB of VRAM, there have long been concerns that this severely undervalues the card. As a result, there was tremendous relief when rumours of a 12GB loadout started to circulate. However, there is now a shadow of question over that.

Is Nvidia still debating whether or not to reserve 12GB for the RTX 4070 Ti? In fact, evaluating the lower-spec option Kopite7kimi offers may be about making sure the RTX 4070 fits in with the Lovelace GPU family overall and makes sense when compared to the RTX 4080. After all, we've questioned if the 4080's higher profit margin will be threatened by the allegedly more potent RTX 4070, so it stands to reason that Nvidia will want to proceed with caution.

Naturally, all of this assumes that Kopite7kimi is true and that the leaker may be mistaken. The RTX 4070's release doesn't appear to be imminent, though, assuming that Nvidia is still successfully fitting the pieces of the Lovelace jigsaw puzzle of where the various RTX 4000 models lie in relation to one another in terms of specs.

Another rumour that has surfaced is that Nvidia may release the RTX 4090 in October, and instead of the RTX 4080 and 4070 following in a month (or two), they may not until 2023. (To make it easier to sell extra RTX 3000 GPU stock that would otherwise go unused if new cards are already available or soon to be available).

This would seem to indicate that the release date may be delayed if Team Green hasn't determined on the RTX 4070's exact specifications as suggested. Board partners will require plenty of time and advance notice of the official configuration for these products before they can begin creating their own third-party graphics cards and thinking about cooling options, among other things.

This current report is unfortunate in two ways: first, it suggests that the RTX 4070 may still employ the less potent theoretical specification, and second, it suggests that the Lovelace graphics card may not appear for some time.
