The names of the American medical clinics that perform abortions will soon be prominently displayed by Google in both Google Maps and Search. The corporation is taking this action to avoid mixing abortion centres with anti-abortion centres, the company's top executives told US lawmakers. Over 650 employees of Alphabet, the company that owns Google, demanded earlier this month that the company provide abortion benefits to contractors, stop funding anti-abortion politicians, and provide users with better protection against inaccurate information about abortion and requests from law enforcement.
Now, finding "abortion clinics near me" online will bring up locations that can be verified to perform abortions. In a letter to Senator Mark Warner and Representative Elissa Slotkin, Mark Isakowitz, Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy for the US and Canada at Google, provided an explanation.
Isakowitz also mentioned that Google would allow users to expand their searches to include other significant entries, such as businesses that don't perform abortions.
The most recent letter from Google is in response to one from Warner and Slotkin, dated June 17, in which they requested Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai to take action to stop Google search results about abortion that were inaccurate.
As was previously noted, over 650 Alphabet employees urged that the firm provide abortion benefits to contractors and stop funding anti-abortion politicians. Additionally, the workers asked Google to better shield its customers from false material on abortion and law enforcement inquiries.
