According to reports, Google is continuing to work on adding facial recognition to the Pixel 6. Future smartphones will likely benefit from this capability, including the incoming Pixel 7 series. A fresh report quoting industry insiders claims that Google may be working on integrating the face unlock feature and the under-display fingerprint sensor. This method is said to be energy-efficient and is anticipated to function on a variety of Pixel smartphones. Notably, face unlock was rumoured to be a feature of the Pixel 6 Pro, but it was purportedly removed just before the device's release.

In addition to using the under-display fingerprint sensor, Google is creating a face unlock feature, according to a report from 9to5Google. According to reports, this new feature lowers the fingerprint sensor's identification threshold when the smartphone just partially recognises a face. According to the research, a fingerprint match's accuracy requirements would be much reduced.

Notably, this new capability may operate as intended without any extra hardware. As a result, this strategy might enable Google to add the face unlock feature to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, as the company is apparently testing it on these phones.

The Pixel 6a and other Google smartphones in the a-series could also support face unlock using the fingerprint sensor, the report claims. This capability may be used by the future Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro as well. Notably, this strategy is claimed to use less energy than the standard face unlock feature.

The source also suggests that Google may be using this new strategy to maximise the performance of the subpar under-display sensor included in Pixel 6 series handsets. According to reports, the sensor's identification performance is slow compared to the speeds offered by competing premium smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S22 series. For its Pixel smartphone family, Google has yet to formally disclose intentions to incorporate a facial recognition-based system.
