The MIX Fold 2, Xiaomi's second foldable phone, was unveiled on August 11 and boasts significant upgrades over its predecessor and rivals. The new model has upgraded hardware in addition to having a more practical design. When compared to the Mi MIX Fold, which was unveiled in 2021, it offers a lot of innovations.

The new foldable device includes 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, and 12GB/1TB storage options and is powered by Qualcomm's most recent 8+ Gen 1 chipset. The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 is clearly not your average device, as seen by the flagship-class chipset and large storage options. The first screen on the gadget is 6.56 inches in size and has FHD resolution; the second screen is 8.02 inches.

What are the differences between the Mi MIX Fold and Xiaomi MIX Fold 2?

At the time of its release, foldable phones were viewed as useless, yet they are now common. The Mi MIX Fold, Xiaomi's first foldable phone, was extremely thick when folded and could be awkward to operate. The screen is bigger and the thickness has been significantly decreased with the new MIX Fold 2. The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 is almost as thick as a standard phone when folded. The camera has also seen significant enhancements.

High-quality screens are present on both models, but thanks to various advances, the current model is more practical. The MIX Fold 2 has a significantly large main screen compared to the Mi MIX Fold's very modest main screen. The 6.52-inch HD primary screen on the Mi MIX Fold has a screen to body ratio of 67.83%. The screen appears small because to the bezels' thickness. On the other hand, the MIX Fold 2 boasts a 6.56-inch FHD primary display with an 83.96% screen to body ratio.

While Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 has a secondary screen with a resolution of 8.02 inches and 18602480 pixels, Mi MIX Fold has a secondary screen with a resolution of 8.01 inches and 19142160 pixels. The screen's 120HZ refresh rate, up from 90HZ on MIX Fold 2, is the most significant new feature.

 Body

Although the device bodies are identical and both feature glass backs and metal frames, the current model has a significantly thinner gadget. The Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold is 7.6 mm thick when it is fully unfolded. It may be folded to a thickness of 17.2 mm. The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 is quite ergonomic, but the Mi MIX Fold, which is roughly twice as thick as a typical phone, may be challenging to operate.

The MIX Fold 2 has a 5.4 mm thickness when it is unfolded and an 11.2 mm thickness when it is folded. With the exception of its predecessor, all other folding phone models are thicker than the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2, which is surprisingly tiny for a foldable phone.

Platform

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, which was introduced in 2020 and is still fairly strong, powers the Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold. Because it is made by Samsung, the chipset, which has Cortex X1, Cortex A78, and Cortex A55 cores, is susceptible to overheating. This chipset features the Adreno 660 GPU and a 5nm manufacturing technology. There are 12/256GB and 12/512GB RAM/storage options for the Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold.

On the other side, Qualcomm's newest chipset, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 that was released in 2022, powers the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2. The new chipset in MIX Fold 2 promises exceptional energy efficiency and warms up significantly less than Snapdragon 888 thanks to TSMC's 4nm manufacturing process. Cortex X2, Cortex A710, and Cortex A510 cores are present in the new chipset. The fact that it supports ARMV9 is its primary distinction from the Snapdragon 888. Adreno 730 GPU-equipped SoCs are significantly more stable than Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 also comes in 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, and 12GB/1TB RAM/storage configurations.

Camera

With the MIX Fold 2, a new era in back cameras has started. The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 also features the LEICA optics that Xiaomi utilises in its newest flagship models. Great advancements have been made in camera sensors as well as optics. Samsung's ISOCELL HM2 sensor, which has a resolution of 108 MP, serves as the Mi MIX Fold's primary camera. A 13 MP ultra-wide-angle sensor with a 123 degree field of view serves as the device's second camera, while an 8 MP telephoto sensor serves as its third camera. With the Mi MIX Fold, the rear camera can capture films in up to 8K resolution. Twenty MP is the resolution of the front camera.

The primary camera sensor on the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 includes a 50MP resolution Sony IMX 766 sensor, which can produce more vibrant colours than Samsung ISOCELL HM2. A 13MP ultra-wide-angle sensor with a 123-degree viewing angle makes up the second camera of the new model, which is nearly identical to its predecessor. An 8MP telephoto sensor is located on the MIX Fold 2's third camera on the back. Similar to the Mi MIX Fold, the front camera has a resolution of 20 MP, and the rear camera is capable of 8K video recording. Although it doesn't appear that the MIX Fold 2 has a significant camera boost, the LEICA-tuned optics are a significant advancement.

Battery

The first-generation MIX foldable device has a battery that is obviously superior to the new one. A 5020mAh battery powers the Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold, while a 4500mAh battery powers the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2. Given the significant thickness difference between the Mi MIX Fold and MIX Fold 2, the current model's decreased battery capacity may be due to the thinner design. 67W rapid charging is supported by both models.

Conclusion

In comparison to its predecessor, Xiaomi's latest foldable device, MIX Fold 2, has a far better screen-to-body ratio, a more potent SoC, and LEICA branded rear cameras. Only the battery capacity is less than the Mi MIX Fold, but even this is a little drawback. Because it is significantly thinner than the previous model, the new one is more practical. There are some major features in the new MIX Fold 2.
