In Italy, Xiaomi was recently penalised by the local government. Earlier this month, the brand was fined a hefty amount of 3.2 million euros ($3.234 million). The company's failure to fix phones that had scratches or other minor problems while the devices were still covered by warranties, according to the Italian Competition Authority, led to the verdict.
Italian authorities claim that the company's local business charged customers after assuring them that the goods were of high quality, whereas in fact the business ought to check for any problems and accept returns of goods without charging any fees, including freight and inspection costs.
When asked about the decision, Xiaomi told the local media that it was aware of it and was looking into why. The business added that it has always carried out legal and compliant activities while abiding by the pertinent local rules and regulations. The business claims that it is committed to giving every customer the best after-sales service experience.
According to Canalys data, 19.7% of smartphones sold in Europe during the first quarter of 2022 were made by Xiaomi, while Western Europe's market share for smartphones is 15.4%. Italy ranks second among these countries for smartphone market share.
Since the beginning of this year, Xiaomi has made frequent claims that Europe is one of its most important geographical areas, and its market share in Europe is almost at 20%.
The company will also aim to grow its market share by fortifying its operator channels, boosting the strength of its product and brand portfolio, and developing its retail operating capabilities.
Since 2020, the Italy Competition Authority has punished companies like Apple, Amazon, Samsung, Google, and others for a number of offences. In December 2021, the authority fined Amazon up to 1.128 billion euros ($1.14 billion), but Amazon later announced it would appeal.
