Instagram said earlier this week that it was experimenting with new ways to check users' ages as part of its account-creation verification process. It appears that one of the choices would ask users to record a selfie video to verify their age.
In addition to requesting users to provide their identity evidence online, the well-known social media network has disclosed that it is trying two other methods of age verification. "When we know if someone is a teen (13-17 years), we provide them with age-appropriate experiences like defaulting them into private accounts, preventing unwanted contact from adults they don't know, and limiting the options advertisers have to reach them with ads," said Erica Finkle, director of data governance at Meta (Instagram's parent company).
The business will collaborate with Yoti, a company that specialises in online age verification and protects customers' privacy, for this verification solution. After the user uploads the video, Yoti's algorithm uses facial cues to infer the person's age. Once the image's age has been confirmed, Meta and Yoti will remove it. In addition, Instagram intends to let users choose three mutual followers to verify the user's age.
However, at least 18-year-olds must be present to attest for the verification procedure.
