 HIGHLIGHTS
  • Last night, Apple announced iOS 16 during their Worldwide Developer Conference 2022 event.
  • When iOS 16 is released this autumn, it will be compatible with iPhones 8 and up.
  • The latest iOS 16 upgrade will not be available for iPhones in the 7 series and below.

Apple unveiled iOS 16 at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2022, hosted at Apple Park in Cupertino, last night. Apple also indicated which iPhones will and will not receive the latest iOS upgrade. The newly announced iOS 16 will offer a slew of new features and upgrades to supported iPhones, including the option to add and customise lock screen widgets, Live Text and Visual Look Up, Live Activities, and more.

Older iPhones, however, will not acquire any of these capabilities because they will not receive the iOS 16 update. Here's a list of iPhones that won't be getting the iOS 16 update.

Phones that will not receive the iOS 16 upgrade

The user must have at least an iPhone 8 to download the latest iOS 16. This means that when iOS 16 is released this autumn, it will only work on iPhones that were released alongside the iPhone 8 or later. This means that iPhones from the iPhone 7 series and before will not receive the iOS 16 update. The following is a complete list of iPhones that will not receive the update.

  • iPhone 4

  • iPhone 4s

  • iPhone 5

  • iPhone 5s

  • iPhone 6

  • iPhone 6 Plus

  • iPhone 6s

  • iPhone 6s Plus

  • iPhone 7

  • iPhone 7 Plus

  • iPhone SE 2016

The original iPhone SE and the iPhone 7 were released in 2016 and received iOS updates for six years. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus were released in 2015 and have seen seven years of iOS updates. That's a lot of upgrades for a phone that's six or seven years old. Most Android phones now come with three years of Android software updates, implying that earlier iPhones received twice as many updates as Android. Samsung and Google have lately begun shipping four-year upgrades instead of three, as well as security fixes for up to five years on their handset

If you have an iPhone 6s or iPhone 7 and don't want to give up the conventional home button and form factor, the Apple iPhone SE 2022 has the same body as previous iPhones and will be updated to iOS 16 and beyond.
