In order to build anticipation for the July 12 launch event, Nothing founder and CEO Carl Pei is continuing his teaser campaign for the upcoming Nothing phone (1). He affirmed today that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ premium mid-range SoC powers the gadget.

Although this comes as no real surprise given that a prototype of the Nothing phone (1) sporting that specific chipset was spotted on Geekbench a few days ago, it's still nice to have the official affirmation. Clearly, high-end chips are now much more expensive than they were when Pei and the other co-founders of OnePlus launched the company many years ago.

Nothing specifically states that the Snapdragon 778G+ is "custom tuned" for the phone (1), but nothing further clarifies what that entails. Don't take this trope too seriously because OnePlus has also used it in the past. It's intriguing that reverse wireless charging and support for wireless charging are what the "+" in "Snapdragon 778G+" apparently refers to.

Nothing indicates that Qualcomm added those features to the SoC specifically for the phone (1), which is difficult to believe but not impossible since no other devices using the Snapdragon 778G or 778G+ have such features to date.

For example, Carl Pei stated that "more powerful chips have diminishing returns" and that "phones have reached a point of good enough performance for general tasks" when explaining why his company decided to use a mid-range chipset for its first phone. Okay, but we're confident that he would have gone with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 if it had still allowed the Nothing phone (1) to be purchased for the same price. Unfortunately, it doesn't, so Pei chose the inferior option to keep the cost low (er). The remainder is marketing.
