Google revealed a significant adjustment to two of its video calling applications earlier today (2nd June 2022). The business intends to combine the Meet and Duo smartphone applications into a single platform dubbed Meet.

The Search Engine Giant announced that the two mobile applications would be combined into a single video streaming platform that will be available on both iOS and Android. For those who are unfamiliar with Google Meet, it is a video streaming service that can accommodate up to 250 individuals in a single video chat room. Duo, on the other hand, is a free video chat programme designed more for personal use than for business virtual meetings.

Following the merger of Duo and Meet, the brand will deactivate the Duo app entirely, leaving just the Meet app in the future. "What's been incredibly crucial is knowing how people choose what tool they're going to use, for what purpose, in what environment," said Javier Soltero, the head of Google Workspace. Both applications were based on video streaming and had a similar layout, but one was designed for one-on-one interactions, while the other was designed for a wider group of users.

In other words, Google's decision to merge the two applications makes sense. However, Duo had the benefit of being able to phone someone instead of inviting them to join a connection. Duo's mobile app will now be the default, and later this year, the Duo app will be renamed Meet. Meet Original will be the name given to the current version of Meet.
