9to5Mac's investigation of the iOS 16 developer preview uncovered indications of AoD (Always on Display) capability. For SpringBoard — the iOS home screen manager – many new backlight management frameworks with direct references to the always-on display capability have been identified.

AoD functionalities were also seen in the Lock Screen, indicating that the functionality would be available shortly. Developers may also test the functionality on any device that can run iOS 16 thanks to a few secret signals.

According to the latest speculations, Apple will only offer AOD to the iPhone 14 Pro series, with previous devices likely missing out. It's unclear if existing models with LTPO AMOLED panels, including as the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, will be able to use AOD.
