In the first quarter of FY22, smartphone shipments in the Philippines fell 5% year on year (YoY) due to significant component shortages and COVID-19 restrictions in China. Despite the drop in shipments, Samsung has maintained its position as the market leader, followed by Realme and Oppo.
According to a report from Counterpoint Research, smartphone shipments in the Philippines fell 5% YoY and 13% QoQ in Q1 2022. The quarter started slowly, as is customary for the season. According to the survey, new product introductions in the second part of the quarter improved overall offline and online channel shipments for most companies.
The debut of the A-series and S22 series helped Samsung maintain its dominance in the first quarter of 2022, with a 26.4 percent share, according to the research. Realme came in second place with a market share of 21%. With a 15.4 percent market share in the Philippines, OPPO came in third in terms of smartphone shipping.
Vivo and Xiaomi, on the other hand, ranked fourth and fifth in the country's smartphone market in Q1 2022, with 14.4 percent and 9% market share, respectively.
"Samsung kept its market lead thanks to marketing and improved performance of its S22 series. The performance of realme has increased as a result of its low-cost smartphones, particularly the C series.Chinese players like as Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and realme ran numerous online marketing programmes, particularly on Shopee and Lazada, which helped boost their shipments," said Counterpoint Research Analyst Akash Jatwala. "In the region, the e-commerce business is rapidly expanding. In Q1 2021, the online channel contributed for roughly 19 percent of overall shipments, up about 28% year on year," Jatwala continued.
COVID-
In the following months, 19 restrictions in China, as well as global inflation, may have an impact on smartphone shipments. As a result, shipments in Q2 2022 may dip marginally year over year. The Philippines' GDP expanded by 8.3 percent in the first quarter of 2022, thanks to improved consumer mood. In the coming quarters, shipments are predicted to climb year over year.
