Samsung debuted its 200MP ISCOCELL HP1 camera sensor in September of last year, but the enormous sensor has yet to appear in a device. That could change in July with the release of a new Motorola phone, and Samsung has released a video demonstrating the sensor's possibilities.

The purpose of the film is to highlight how much detail the HP1 sensor can capture. While no phone was used to demonstrate the new sensor, it was connected to a Frankenstein rig that included a test board, external display, and an extra lens, allowing a group of Samsung engineers to take some detailed cat photos.

After that, an industrial printer was used to print the final 200 MP still. What's the end result? A painting that measured 28 by 22 metres and was made up of twelve individual 2.3 metre long panels that were stitched together and hung from a structure. Of course, the photographers behind the scenes optimised and edited the photo.

Samsung's HP1 sensor introduces ChamelonCell, a brand-new pixel binning technology that can combine up to sixteen pixels in multiple resolutions ranging from 12.5MP stills with a 2.56m pixel pitch to 50MP stills (1.28m pixels) or natively at 200MP (0.64m pixels) depending on your needs.
