This month the Samsung Galaxy A33 and the Galaxy A53 went on sale in the Netherlands. Both are 5G phones with a water-resistant housing and extra long Android update support. Simultaneously with the two new A-series smartphones, Samsung also announced the Galaxy A73 – as the successor to the A72. Unlike its predecessor, the A73 has not yet been introduced for the Dutch market, the device will only be sold in a limited number of countries.

The Samsung A73 is the most advanced A-series model. The smartphone is more advanced than the A53 and less advanced than the high-end S-series models. The device is equipped with a 6.7-inch Full HD + Super AMOLED + display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

The resolutiis equal to the Galaxy S21 FE, the screen size is even slightly larger. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Samsung has certified the phone IP67, which means that the A73 is both dust and water resistant. IP67 means that you can submerge the smartphone underwater for 30 minutes to a maximum depth of 1 meter. The cheaper A33 and A53 also have the same IP rating. Samsung is ahead of the competition with this, as an IP rating is still not a matter of course for mid-range models.

The smartphone is powered by the new Exynos 1280 SoC – which is also used in the A53. This mid-range processor delivers powerful performance but has to lose out compared to the S-series models. It is of course nice that this Exynos chip also makes 5G support possible. The 5G network is now also available in a large part of the country in the Netherlands. In the coming years, the speed will be further increased, so that the differences with 4G LTE will also increase.

The Samsung A73 comes standard with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage memory. In addition, an extra advanced variant has been announced with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. For both variants, the device also offers support for a microSD memory card, so that you can effortlessly expand the storage memory.

The Galaxy A73 has an advanced camera system. A punch hole has been made on the front for the selfie camera. This houses a 32 megapixel image sensor and an f/2.2. lens. A quadruple camera is placed on the back. For the first time, a 108 megapixel main camera is integrated, with optical image stabilization. In addition, there is a 12MP ultra-wide angle camera, a 5MP depth camera and a 5MP macro camera.

The Samsung Galaxy A73 5G runs on the Android 12 operating system in combination with the One UI 4.1 user interface. This software offers a pleasant user experience and is characterized by numerous personalization options. In addition, Samsung has extended its update policy, from now on the manufacturer offers four years of Android OS updates and five years of security updates – so you can benefit from an up-to-date phone for longer.

Samsung has equipped the A73 with a 5,000 mAh battery. This is large enough to provide a battery life of two days, according to the manufacturer. Charging is possible with a maximum charging power of 25W. However, a charger is no longer included as standard, you have to buy it as an optional accessory. Last year this trend was already started for the S-series models, in 2022 the more affordable A-series models will also be delivered without a charger.

Price & Availability

The Galaxy A73 weighs 181 grams and has the following dimensions: 163.7 × 76.1 × 7.6 mm. The 3.5mm headphone jack is no longer available, of course it is possible to use Bluetooth earphones. The new A-series model is available in three colours: black, white and mint green. The smartphone has a suggested retail price of around €475.

However, the device is not carried in the Netherlands. Alternatives within the Samsung sales range are the cheaper Galaxy A53 and the more expensive Galaxy S21 FE.
