Nothing was formed by Carl Pei, who, while at OnePlus, pioneered the extended teaser campaign for a new product. As a result, the impending Nothing phone (1) is getting its own extended teaser marketing. We've previously learnt about some carrier alliances, and now it's time to learn about something new.
The back of the Nothing phone (1) will be transparent. Pei and Tom Howard, Nothing's head of design, disclosed this today. Howard claims that they "wanted to bring the inner out," which posed some challenges given that a smartphone contains over 400 components.
Furthermore, the Nothing team sought to highlight those that they believe are particularly fascinating. That includes items such as the camera and the wireless charging coil. "From a manufacturing standpoint, you're looking at components that the end user rarely sees, so you essentially have to overhaul the entire manufacturing process to highlight them," Howard adds.
Nothing, according to Pei, wants to have its own, instantly recognisable, iconic design language from the beginning, so that when you look at all of its goods, you can see a consistent vision. "Phone (1) and Ear (1) will clearly come from the same family, and we will continue the same mindset when we fill out the remainder of our product line," Pei said. Nothing, he believes, should be able to stand out because no other tech business, aside from Apple, has such a consistent style of building things.
Indeed, the inherent beauty and complexity of consumer electronics would be one of his company's distinctive selling advantages. "I think a really strong philosophy that we have is that design is not just ornament, but that form and function must be married," Howard adds. To lessen its initial carbon footprint, the Nothing phone (1)'s frame will be manufactured from recyclable aluminium.
