iPhone customers who have used the same phone for a long time are asking when they would no longer receive upgrades. Apple gadgets are not immune to the fact that all things must come to an end. Smartphones become obsolete over time and lose support from their manufacturers, and as a result, many Apple devices are likely nearing the end of their useful lives. It's almost time to say farewell to these beauties.

These iPads and iPhones will stop getting updates

Smartphone manufacturers typically cease upgrading their devices after a set period of time, since they become too old to support the most recent upgrades or get sluggish on them. Even if certain devices were fine with the most recent upgrades, update rules kick in and prohibit any further updates. This policy is shared by all smartphone manufacturers and is not unique to Apple.

Below are the models that will likely to be dropped after iOS 16:

  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE (1st-generation)
  • iPad Mini 4
  • iPad Pro (2015)
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad (5th-generation)

If you want to receive updates, don't buy these devices. Because certain iPads and iPhones will no longer get upgrades. The final decision is likely to be made during the WWDC conference, where Apple is anticipated to discuss its new OS upgrades and all of the changes that come with them. However, if the reports are accurate, Apple may discontinue support for all devices with the A9 chipset, as the list above includes devices with this or an older chipset that were all released before 2016. Along with these devices, the iPhone 7 series is the next in line, with an end-of-life date of 2024 projected.
