Apart from the Oculus VR headsets, Meta, the newly established parent company of social media behemoth Facebook, has been attempting to get into the hardware sector with limited success.
The corporation is now rumored to be working on new AR glasses under the codename Project Nazare. According to the source, Meta plans to commercialize the device in 2024, with more sophisticated variants following in 2026 and 2028.
According to The Verge, the business has invested billions of dollars in the creation of these new AR spectacles, which are part of Mark Zuckerberg's metaverse vision.
The gadget will also be more expensive than the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset, which is now available for $299. This is most likely due to the higher cost of the materials required to make the AR glasses.
It will have eye-tracking cameras, specialized waveguides, and microLED projectors, all of which are said to cost thousands of dollars. With such high costs, the first generation seems to be a niche product.
According to the article, the gadget weighs over 100 grams, which is almost four times the weight of standard spectacles, and has thick black frames. It will reportedly have a 4-hour battery life and be fueled by an accompanying wireless puck that fits in the pocket.
According to the article, Meta does not have a functional wearable version of the spectacles. This indicates that, while the business expects to introduce this gadget by 2024, there may be some adjustments to the launch schedule.
