New phones are released throughout the year, with glitzy marketing efforts enticing us to replace our phones. While some alphas are unaffected by marketing, others simply go out and buy new phones. So, after purchasing a new phone, what do you do with your old one? Should I sell it? Of course, you'll try to sell it, but the value of an old phone might go so low that it's not even worth the effort. So, what are you going to do? It's not like you can convert an old phone into a security camera or something. Can't you? You, indeed.
How to turn your old phone to a security camera?
You'll save a lot of money by converting your old phone into a security camera. Mobile phones have a respectable, if not outstanding, camera and a battery that can last up to 5-6 hours of continuous usage, so it's only natural to put all that remarkable hardware to good use. Turning your old phone into a security camera is a simple DIY project that can be completed in three simple steps; let me show you how!
Step #1 Download a security camera app on the old device
First and foremost, you must download and install a security camera app on your old phone. You'll be able to access the video feed on your new phone thanks to security camera applications. These apps will also alert you if a person is identified. There are several security camera applications available. AtHome, Alfredcamera, WardenCam, and IP webcam are a few examples. We'll be utilizing the AtHome security camera app for demonstration purposes. This program is really simple to use and set up. Night vision, intercom, cloud storage, remote monitoring, and other functions are included. AtHome is compatible with any device, including the iPhone, Android, Smart TV, and PC. To begin:
- Install the AtHome Video camera app on your old device. This program will turn your old gadget into a security camera. After you run the AtHome app for the first time, a unique Connection ID will be provided to the device, which you will need to input into the device you wish to use as a monitor.
2. Then, on another device, download and install the AtHome viewer app. This device will serve as the monitor; it might be an iPhone, an Android phone, or a laptop computer. On your new device, sign up for and log in to the AtHome viewer app.
3. To stream the video output of your old phone, select "Add by CID" or "By QR Code."
4. You'll be able to observe the video output from your old device to the monitor device after successfully logging onto both devices. I tested it on one of my old phones, and it worked well. Take a look at the photographs below.
Step#2 Find a suitable location to place the phone security camera
Now that you've converted your phone into a security camera, you'll need to select a suitable location for it. You must locate a location where the phone camera can cover the most ground. You may, for example, put it in your living room or any other area where you spend the majority of your time. You could also want to put it in the room where you keep your valuables.
Because a single phone camera can only cover a certain area of your home, you may utilize numerous phones to gain better coverage. To improve monitoring, install the AtHome app on your PC. You'll also need to install your old phone in the correct location; for this, you may use a tiny tripod or a clamp.
Step#3 Plug it to the charger
Your phone will not last long if it is constantly streaming videos, so keep it connected in to a charger. It is preferable if you keep your phone plugged in and close to a power source. As a result, your phone will be able to stream video indefinitely. If you can't install your near a power source, you may also buy in some lengthy USB cords.
And presto! You have successfully converted an old phone into a security camera. Of course, this is not a permanent solution, but it allows you to make the most of your phone's hardware.
