The Garmin Vivosmart 5 has an OLED display with a resolution of 88x154 pixels. According to the firm, the small model fits wrists with a diameter of 122-188mm and the large variant fits wrists with a circumference of 148-228mm. It has many sensors, including a Garmin Elevate heart rate sensor, a pulse oxygen saturation sensor, an accelerometer, and an ambient light sensor. Garmin has not supplied an IP rating, however it does state that wearers do not need to remove the band when swimming.

The Garmin Vivosmart 5's health monitoring functions include heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen tracking, enhanced sleep monitoring, stress management, and women's health tracking. Body Battery Energy Monitoring is another function, in which the tracker tracks the body's energy levels throughout the day to determine the optimal periods for exercise and relaxation.

The Garmin Vivosmart 5 has a Hydration Tracking function that captures the wearer's daily fluid consumption and reminds them to remain hydrated. They may also establish an automatic hydration goal that adapts based on how much perspiration the wearers shed while exercising. Another function is Respiration Tracking, which displays information about how the wearer breathes during the day.

The Fitness Age function on the Garmin Vivosmart 5 estimates whether the wearer's body is younger or older than they are based on chronological age, weekly strenuous exercise, resting heart rate, and BMI or body fat percentage. According to the organization, individuals would then receive advice on how to reduce their fitness age. You also receive a step counter, calories burned, distance traveled, and assistance with gym activities and other sports. Bluetooth Smart and ANT+ are two connectivity options for the Garmin Vivosmart 5. According to the manufacturer, the wearable has a battery life of up to 7 days.
