According to an analyst, a future iPhone upgrade adding an under-display camera for Face ID to the iPhone may not appear until 2024, with a possibly clear and full display anticipated for the "iPhone 16."

According to current reports about the "iPhone 14 Pro" models, Apple may abandon the controversial notch. However, Ming-Chi Kuo of TF Securities believes that the notch and its replacement might be replaced by an under-display version in a future model in a tweet.

In reaction to a tweet issued on March 30 by DSCC analyst Ross Young expecting an under-display version of Face ID for the iPhone 16, Kuo stated on Saturday morning that his prognosis is the same. "Under-display Face ID will be available in 2024 (iPhone 16)," predicts Kuo.

Kuo adds that "this time frame is less of a technical concern and more of a marketing objective" for why the concept would come in that exact model. Kuo does not go into specifics, but it is most likely related to the anticipated replacement for the notch.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max versions, planned in autumn 2022, are rumoured to include a hole-punch cutout and a pill-shaped hole. The two holes would be used to replace the bigger notch with a more minimalist design, giving consumers more screen and a less-obvious display feature.

Given Apple's proclivity to keep design modifications for at least two years, if the pill and hole-punch cuts are introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro range, it's realistic to anticipate Apple to stick with the concept for at least two generations. In March, Young recommended that Apple use the pill and hole on all generations of the iPhone 15 series.

Kuo previously speculated about an under-display camera system, claiming in April 2021 that such a system may debut on the iPhone in 2023.

According to reports, Samsung Display is developing under-panel technology that might be used to conceal the Face ID sensor in future iPhones. While it may appear in Samsung's Fold range in 2023, it may not make it onto the market.
