  • Last year, the Mac computer industry made $35.2 billion in revenue.
  • Apple is also experimenting with a Mac mini equipped with an M1 Pro processor.
  • A 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and "M2 Max" CPUs is scheduled to be released.

According to developer logs, Apple has begun broad internal testing of various new Mac models using next-generation M2 chips as part of its quest to produce more powerful laptops utilizing indigenous CPUs.

According to the logs, the Apple is testing at least nine new Macs with four distinct M2-based CPUs — the successors to the present M1 series — with third-party programs in the App Store. This has been confirmed by persons familiar with the situation. The move is an important milestone in the development process, implying that the new computers will be available in the coming months.

The M2 processor is Apple's latest attempt to push the frontiers of computer processing following a recent break with Intel Corp. Apple has steadily replaced Intel processors with its own technology, and it now hopes to win even more ground with a more sophisticated range. Following years of lackluster growth, the Mac computer segment has had a revival in the last two years, aided in part by home office employees purchasing new equipment. The company made $35.2 billion (approximately Rs. 2,69,570 crore) in the last fiscal year, accounting for around 10% of Apple's total.

Even if testing is advanced in certain situations, there is no assurance that all models will be issued. Apple's Cupertino, California-based representative declined to comment on the plans.

The new machines being tested include:

  • J413 is the codename for a MacBook Air equipped with an M2 chip. This Mac will have eight CPU cores, which handle the main processing, and ten graphics cores. This is an increase from the existing MacBook Air's eight graphics cores.
  • J473 is a Mac mini with an M2 chip. The specs of this computer will be the same as those of the MacBook Air. There's also a "M2 Pro" variant in the works, designated J474.
  • J493 is the codename for an entry-level MacBook Pro with an M2 chip. The specs will be the same as the MacBook Air.
  • J414 is a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and "M2 Max" processors. According to the logs, the M2 Max processor features 12 CPU cores and 38 graphics cores, up from 10 CPU cores and 32 graphics cores in the present iteration. It will also be equipped with 64 gigabytes of RAM.
  • J416 is a 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and M2 Max processors. The M2 Max in the 16-inch MacBook Pro will have the same characteristics as the 14-inch MacBook Pro.
  • J180 is the codename for a Mac Pro. The M1 Ultra chip, which was utilized in the Mac Studio computer, will be replaced in this system.
  • Apple is also testing a Mac mini with an M1 Pro CPU, which is the same processor seen in today's entry-level 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. J374 is the codename for this machine. The business has also tried an M1 Max version of the Mac mini, but the forthcoming Mac Studio may render both computers obsolete.
