Since Android 9.0 Pie, Android has enabled DNS-over-TLS (DoT). Private DNS may be found in your phone's Network & Internet settings. A code modification discovered in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) in September of last year revealed that Google was preparing to provide DNS over HTTPS capability in Android 13. And now it's finally official.
According to Esper's Mishaal Rahman, Android 13 now includes native support for DNS over HTTPS (DoH). On the most fundamental level, both the DoT and the DoH accomplish the same thing: they encrypt DNS communication. DNS over TLS encrypts data using TLS (also known as SSL), whereas DNS over HTTPS sends DNS queries and replies over HTTP or HTTP/2 protocols.
However, there are several advantages to employing DoH instead of DoT. DoT employs a dedicated port through which everyone on the network may monitor incoming and outgoing data – yet, the information itself remains encrypted. The Department of Homeland Security, on the other hand, employs port 443, the standard port for HTTPS communication. As a result, DoH requests and traffic might blend in with the rest of the HTTPS traffic, making it difficult for attackers or network administrators to monitor or prevent DoH inquiries. DNS over HTTPS capability is already available in popular browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
On devices running Android 13 DP2, there does not appear to be a user-facing setting for accessing DNS via HTTPS. Esper, on the other hand, claims that it may be activated through the device config command.
Recent AOSP code changes indicate that Google is contemplating implementing DoH support by default in Android 13, albeit this is not yet definitive.
Android 13 introduces a slew of new features, including auto-theming icons, per-app language support, complete Bluetooth LE Audio compatibility, run-time notification permissions, and much more. Furthermore, the most recent version adds HDR video compatibility to the Camera2 API and provides new gaming APIs that may drastically improve game loading times.
