  • It is now being tested in Argentina with a small group of users.

WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned instant messaging software, has been adding new capabilities, and we've discovered one more that could help it eventually catch up to other popular rivals. We're not talking about increased user security and privacy, but rather the ability to communicate files up to 2GB, which Telegram already offers.

According to a recent post from WABetaInfo, the new functionality is currently being rolled out to a restricted group of beta users. The feature was discovered in iOS beta release 22.7.0.76 for the first time. Users will be allowed to email files up to 2GB in the future, according to the update. Users of the WhatsApp beta for iOS 22.7.0.76 are receiving prompts that state, "This document is too large." Documents up to 2GB in size can be sent." WhatsApp beta for Android versions 2.22.8.5, 2.22.8.6, and 2.22.8.7 also has a 2GB capacity limit. The current limit for all users is 100MB.

According to the source, the feature is presently being tested with a limited group of iOS users in Argentina. There is currently no information on when this feature will be available to other users. We don't know if the functionality will ever be accessible in the stable version because it is still under testing.

In related news, after eight months of beta testing, WhatsApp has begun bringing out multi-device capability to all users. Users can use their WhatsApp account on up to four devices at the same time without needing to have an active internet connection on their smartphone. Users on iOS will get the functionality this month with some tweaks, while Android users will get multi-device support next month.

WhatsApp has also begun experimenting with message reactions and is working to improve the recording of voice communications. Chats from Android to iOS are also being worked on by the instant messaging provider.
