According to social media posts, some fifth-generation iPad Air customers are complaining about a supposed decrease in build quality (via iMore).

According to the concerns, the iPad Air has a substantially thinner metal casing, which causes creaking, a hollow sense in the palm, and minor pressure on the device's rear distorting the display. A Reddit post features a considerable number of comments from iPad Air customers who are concerned about the device's build quality. According to the thread's first post:

Today, I purchased and received two blue iPad Air 2022, and I'm a little surprised. The metal backplate is significantly thinner than that of the iPad 4, which I also own. When you grasp the gadget, you can nearly feel the battery through the plate. When you hold both iPads, they feel the same and make cracking noises. This did not occur with the iPad Air 4...

A slew of answers on the forum concurred and expounded on the difficulties, implying that it is not an isolated incident, and some users have even recorded films of cracking noises caused by slight taps on the device's display to show some of the flaws. Some users said that the iPad Air "feels very low quality" in comparison to its predecessor, pointing out that there is a noticeable difference in the device's back. One response stated that it "feels like I can feel the interior from the rear."

The initial reviews of the fifth-generation iPad Air were published earlier this week, but no reviewers highlighted any decrease in build quality, and the iPad Air is externally similar to the previous-generation device save for additional colour possibilities. The iPad Air has the same M1 chip as the iPad Pro, 5G connection on cellular variants, an enhanced 12-megapixel front camera with Center Stage support, up to a 2x quicker USB-C connector for data transmission, and new colour choices. Pricing in the United States continues to start at $599 for 64GB of storage.
