Samsung has filed a patent for a Galaxy phone with a wrap-around display, S Pen compatibility, virtual gaming buttons, and a variety of operating modes.
Xiaomi first launched the Mi Mix Alpha two years ago. It was the first, and as far as we know, the only, smartphone with a surround display. Despite this, numerous smartphone makers have filed a patent for a phone with a flexible screen that wraps around the housing partially or completely. GadgetsCafe previously covered an Honor smartphone with a wrap-around display. Oppo is also rumoured to be working on a dual-sided smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy smartphone has a display that wraps around the entire device.
Samsung Electronics filed a patent application with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) in July 2021 for a "Method and apparatus for performing functionalities of an electronic device with flexible display." The 46-page document was published on November 18, 2021, and it is also included in the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) database for global patent protection.
Previously, the focus of the documentation was on the flexible screen; now, the focus is on the control choices. Graphic artist Parvez Khan, aka Technizo Concept, has designed a series of 3D models based on Samsung's patent to get a better feel for this unique smartphone. As indicated in the lengthy description, the Samsung wrap-around display smartphone can be operated using both the touchscreen and pen input. Samsung has already demonstrated that it can make the S Pen work with a flexible screen with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The Z Fold 3 is the first folding phone that support the S Pen.

The revolutionary Samsung Galaxy phone features a big flexible display that spans the phone's front, sides, and back. At the top, there is a reasonably wide frame edge that can contain the essential sensors and cameras. Because there is no room on the sides for physical buttons, the power button is located at the top.
As a result, virtual keys have taken the role of the volume keys. Virtual game keys and shoulder buttons are also mentioned in the documentation. When playing in landscape mode, the shoulder buttons are on the side, making them conveniently accessible.
On the right, you'll find icons and shortcuts. Status symbols, such as the time, battery level, and network strength, can be displayed on the opposite hand. Depending on whether the user is right-handed or left-handed, this can easily be reversed in the settings.
On both the front and back, one or more cameras are installed. We assumed one front camera and three rear cameras for the 3D renders, which is similar to Samsung's current high-end models.
Both cameras can be utilised to snap selfies as well as conventional photo and video recordings because the phone has a display surface on both sides. The display acts as a viewfinder to help you figure out the best composition.
The user can shift content from the front display to the back screen — and vice versa – with a simple swipe. Content can also be presented on both sides depending on the application. Take a look at the Photo Gallery, for example. On one side, the entire photo gallery is displayed, while on the other, a single photo can be displayed.
This does not, however, apply solely to the Photo Gallery. The patent description mentions a number of different operating scenarios, such as using an internet browser, using a messaging app, watching movies, and so on. The phone can sense the user's grip on the device and adjust the interface accordingly.

Samsung also notes in the paperwork the possibility of integrating a projector and/or holographic capabilities, in which 3D pictures are projected in the air utilising light interference. A Samsung holographic smartphone was also caught by the business in 2018.
In addition, the integration of water, gas, and electricity measurement equipment is examined. It also mentions using medical sensors to monitor your blood sugar level, heart rhythm, and blood pressure. Of course, not all of these characteristics are required. Samsung, on the other hand, is looking into all possibilities in order to be able to combine the most useful features.
Samsung's smartphone with a wrap-around display also allows wireless charging. Of course, there's also the option of using a wired charger. The USB Type-C port, as well as a speaker and microphone, are located at the bottom of the device.

For the time being, it's unclear whether Samsung plans to release a dual-sided smartphone in the future. The fact that the paperwork is growing increasingly thorough is striking. However, there are a few drawbacks. Because the gadget has a wide screen on both sides, the display is more likely to be damaged — even when carried in a purse or pocket. Furthermore, due to the form factor, using a phone case will be tough.
