According to a breakdown done by YouTube channel Max Tech, the Mac Studio's SSD storage is not soldered in place and may be upgradeable.
Max Tech showed in a comprehensive disassembly video of the new Mac Studio that the SSD storage is situated in two slots and is quite straightforward to remove or replace because it is not soldered down. Individual SSDs may be switched between the two slots, giving the impression that they are modular.
According to Apple's website, the Mac Studio's SSD storage is "not user accessible," and the company advises customers to set the device with enough capacity at the time of purchase. This is most likely due to the fact that the Mac Studio's internals are still tough to access from the outside. The rubber ring on the machine's base must be removed to reveal four screws that allow the gadget to be opened.
Max Tech speculated that Apple might provide SSD storage upgrades at a later date, similar to how it launched a kit to update the storage on the Mac Pro in mid-2020, but the simple access could be limited to repairs only, allowing repair personnel to more easily remove and replace SSDs.
The SSD storage in Apple's other unique silicon-based Macs, such as the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini, is soldered in place and cannot be easily replaced, though some trained technicians have tried.
