According to The Elec, LG is working on supplying Apple with OLED display panels for two iPad models before offering bigger panels for the company's first OLED MacBook around 2025.
LG Display is said to be planning to offer Apple with Gen 8.5 OLED panels for the company's first OLED MacBook. The gadget is expected to be released "about 2025."
According to The Elec, LG has been testing the deposition process for Gen 8.5 OLED panels at its Paju factory since December 2021. The review process is expected to take up to a year to complete. Previous sources have indicated that LG's facility in Paju, South Korea, is critical to Apple's intentions to provide iPads with OLED panels as well as enhance its supply of OLED displays for future iPhone models.
The Elec further stated that LG intends to deploy its Gen 6 OLED manufacturing lines for 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad models, which will be released before the first OLED MacBook. So the release of the OLED MacBooks in 2025 will follow the release of Apple's first two OLED iPads, LG intends to employ bigger substrates, such as Gen 8.5, because more panels can be carved out per substrate in less time.
Ming-Chi Kuo, a prominent Apple analyst, tweeted yesterday that the release of Apple's first MacBook with an OLED display is contingent on the release of 11-inch and 12.9-inch OLED iPad models in 2024, which corresponds with today's article from The Elec:
LG is expected to commence scale production of LTPO OLED panels for iPads between 2023 and 2024, making the reported 2025 debut date for the first OLED MacBook conceivable.
